print edition release in February 2026

In 1970, Nate Ledger has decided to take account of his life after his decision to retreat to a remote cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. His memoir takes him from the aftermath of WWI through a series of loves and losses that weave his story toward present day.

When his long-lost nephew shows up on his doorstep at the beginning of Thanksgiving week, though, Nate's nostalgic reverie is upended. Soon, he is left alone with his nephew's son, Mickey, a boy everyone can only call strange.

But Nate recognizes something familiar in Mickey and sees that the boy might hold the keys to understanding his life, sending Nate on a journey to re-examine the decisions that led him to live a life apart.
