STURGEON GORGE         UP

DATES VISITED: July 2020, September 2020

OTHER ATTENDEES: Unknown

WEATHER: warm and summery on both visits, but September was spectacular--75F, windy and perfect.

DISTANCE: approximately 0.15 miles to Bears Den overlook; 2 miles to falls.

DIFFICULTY:  Bears Den Overlook is an easy walk from a small parking lot to a nice area with a picnic table and one of the best views in the Midwest. The hike to the falls has significant elevation change but is relatively unchallenging.

CONSIDER THIS: Follow up the hike down to the falls with a picnic lunch and afternoon cocktails back at the overlook.

IS THIS HEAVEN? NO IT'S THE UP. But what else are you supposed to think when you can sit on the edge of the gorge, close your eyes and feel the wind on your face without another soul in the world around?

The Sturgeon is wide right up to the falls. There are great boulder fields you can walk on to get down to the river.
The river narrows from 100 feet to 20 feet when it reaches the cascade and 25 foot drop.
