HIGH LAKE SYLVANIA WILDERNESS, UP
CROOKED TO HIGH LAKE
DATE PADDLED: June 3rd, 2021

WEATHER: Overcast and cool; light rain for about 2 hours
DISTANCE: Easy paddle to second bay of Crooked Lake and then a short portage to High Lake.
DIFFICULTY: Should have been easier than it was,
DON'T EVER NOT REMEMBER: Never, ever assume the weather will be warm in the UP even if the forecast says it will be. Sometimes the UP is like Wrigley Field in the summertime when the wind is blowing off the lake.
PRO TIP: Rain gear is helpful; long sleeves are a necessity.
RARE SIGHT: The bog laurel and sundew provided beautiful contrast to the otherwise grayscale day.
This loon followed us from one side of High Lake to the other, very curious the entire time. A pair had a nest on a small island last year and likely have a nest this year as well. They seemed bemused that they caught more fish on High Lake than us.
